The Department of Biomedical Research Unit and Laboratory Animal Centre (BRULAC) and Dental Research Cell (DRC) were established to meet the different thrust areas of research under one roof as a common facility for Research and Development. The Mission of BRULAC and DRC is to carry research ideas of the students, research scholars and faculties into impact research works with full fledged support of research professionals with the aid of well equipped laboratory infrastructure.
Biomedical Research Unit and Laboratory Animal Centre - BRULAC
Biomedical research is the basic research conducted to aid and supports the development of knowledge in the field of Research. To facilitate and to promote research a separate and dedicated research department called Biomedical Research Unit and Lab Animal Centre (BRULAC) was established. BRULAC, at Saveetha Dental College & Hospital, was commissioned in January 2006. The department includes work area for both in vitro and in vivo projects. The generation of innovative ideas and novel scientific knowledge through research is an integral and highly valued activity at BRULAC, Saveetha Dental College, SIMATS.
Animal house has a separate quarantine and experimental sections which can hold three different species of animals such as Rabbit, Rat and Mice. Currently we got approval and permission to house Rat and Mice from CPCSEA. It has well equipped and spacious surgical theatre for performing different surgeries for animals. Animal house also has a number of instruments such as table top centrifuge, weighing machine, soxhlet apparatus, hot air oven, bacteriological incubator, refrigerator for storing the samples and strains. At first floor, we also have a separate lab for conducing Microbiological experiments and a very spacious hall for organising lectures and experiment demonstrations for conducting workshops and hands on training programmes.
BRULAC has separate smart board installed seminar hall for conducting various meetings, seminars and workshops. The Department is well connected by 24hours Wi-Fi connection for accessing articles and necessary information for conducting research activities.
Dental Research Cell - DRC
Dental Research Cell (DRC) is the place for doing in-vitro experiments of the college and even other external projects. Here, we do studies related to dental stem cells like dental pulp stem cells, bone marrow stem cells, periodontal ligament stem cells etc as well as Microbiological research activities which includes detection of drug resistant profile and mechanisms, virulence characterizations, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities of certain herbal products and formulations as well as certain newer molecules, Genetics, Epigenetics, microRNAs biology and its regulations in non- communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes and various types of cancer, human molecular genetics, cancer biology, mitochondrial dysfunction and related diseases, epitranscriptomics (RNA methylation), etc., for the research welfare of all aspiring students and faculties in research.
We also promote the other institutions to utilize the resources available in the department for their innovative research works, through proper channel. Dental research cell has number of instruments and facilities necessary for conducting the basic as well as advanced research activities such as Real-Time PCR, Conventional PCR, ELIZA Plate Reader cum Washer, Semi-Automated Biochemical Analyser, Laminar air flow, Co2 incubator, gel documentation system, inverted microscope, cooling centrifuge, -20°C deep freezer, UV spectrophotometer, hot air oven, bacteriological incubator, serological water bath, UV Trans-illuminator, etc. These instruments are widely utilized by UG, PG, Ph.D., students of our college as well as by students of other institutions.
CENTRE FOR LABORATORY ANIMAL RESEARCH@SAVEETHA MEDICAL COLLEGE
The animal House Facility of Saveetha Medical College named as Centre for Laboratory Animal Research (CLAR) is CPCSEA approved and functions with Instituitional Animal Ethics Commitee.
The facility supports basic research using small Lab Animals such as Rabbits, Rats and Mice.
It supports research for students and scholars pursuing Ph.D and Master's degree programs.
The facility helped in the development of Autoinjectors for drugs such as Amikacin and Buprenorphine which can be used during disaster and emergency situations.
Many projects involve pharmacological evaluation of drugs/compounds in several disease models e.g Diabetes, Parkinson's Disease, infectious Wounds and also chemical induced models of hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, fluoride induced neurotoxicity in CLAR facility.
The safety evaluation of various vector repellents were tested in combinations using rats in view of environmental protection and conservation.
Biomarker discovery studies are also initiated using animals for heavy metal associated Kidney injury.
Hands on animal handling training are provided to PGs viz., MDs,
and M.Sc students as animal house postings.
