SAVEETHA’S SURGICAL EXCELLENCE REMOVAL OF 759 CYSTS FROM A 29 YEAR OLD PATIENT PERITONEAL HYDATID DISEASE
Saveetha Medical College and Hospitals, Thandalam has added one more feather to its surgical excellence. The doctors of Saveetha Hospital have successfully remover 759 cysts from a patient’s abdomen. A 29 year old lady was admitted at Saveetha Medical College and Hospitals with complaints of abdominal pain and distension of over three months duration.
Patient had continuous vomiting and the patient was unable to take normal diet. Ultrasound abdomen revealed multiple cystic lesions in the peritoneal cavity. CT scan abdomen also revealed four very large cysts occupying about 50% of the abdominal cavity with numerous daughter cysts inside suggesting multiple peritoneal hydatid disease. The cysts was adherent to liver, portal vein, bile duct, left kidney, large intestine, urinary bladder, large vessels of the right lower limb. This made the surgeons, anaesthetists and critical care physician to plan the operative procedure meticulously as the adjoining organs shouldn’t get affected or injured.
The large cyst in the right side of abdomen was adherent to the liver portal vein bile duct and duodenum. The cyst in the middle of abdomen was adherent to large intestine. The large cyst in the right side of the lower abdomen was adherent large vessels of the right lower limb and urinary bladder. The large cyst of the left side was adherent to the kidney. Each large cyst were opened individually and the different sizes of daughter cyst were removed carefully without spillage taking adequate precautions and cyst wall was removed completely from surrounding structures with care.
“The total count of the daughter cysts in all the four cysts put together was at a staggering 759. This is probably one of the rarest of the occurrences in the medical history and also Hydatid disease is endemic in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Liver is the most common sight of Hydatid cyst” said Dr. Saveetha Rajesh, Director, Saveetha Medial College and Hospital
“Rupture of the cysts would have lead to the immediate shock and morbidity of patient increasing the challenge for the surgeons and anaesthetists after the surgery the Patient was meticulously monitored and was stable during the post-operative period. Peritoneal Hydatid disease is very rare The aetiology is completely attributed to ingestion of contaminated food and water. Many of these people will be experiencing severe clinical syndromes which are life-threatening if left untreated.” Said DR. B.S. Sundaravadanan –general surgeon, Saveetha Hospital.
The Doctors also stressed on intake of fresh food, clean water and proper hygiene to maintained before intake for healthy living and prevent such occurrences in future. Domestic pets like dogs also should be handled with proper hygiene and de-worming of pets periodically is a must according to WHO.
