Surge 2020-First National Conference by Saveetha College of Architecture and Design on Chennai in collaboration with The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Tamil Nadu titled “Sustainable Urban Communities and Good Environs”
Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS) is an inspiring centre of learning, offering academic programmes up to Doctoral level in the fields of Health Sciences, Medicine, Dental, Physiotherapy, Architecture and Nursing in other areas including Engineering, Law and Management Studies. Saveetha is second to none in India in imbibing the approach of student centered learning and innovative pedagogies to enable the students to be job ready with the desirable demand driven skills.
Saveetha College of Architecture and Design, a part of SIMATS, approved by Council of Architecture (SCAD) has a unique curriculum of a solid foundation in Architecture and Design, a practical hands-on project based methodology and focus on real life challenges. It was started in the year 2019, by Dr. N. M.Veeraiyan. Since its inception, it has set a stage for quality in Architectural education. Collaborations with International Universities such as Curtin University, The University of Nottingham, University of Plymouth, University of Arkansas and Sheffield Hallam University. We also offer Trans-Disciplinary choice based courses which offers opportunities to involve in trans-disciplinary projects from Medical, Dental, Engineering, etc.
The world’s cities are home to 54 %( 4 billion) of the earth’s total population, by 2050 that percentage is projected to increase 66%. Today’s mass urbanization, while an undoubted driver of growth is also unsustainable according to a recent U. N report, by putting many people at risk, creating unnecessary costs, negatively affecting the environment and bolstering social disparity.
In this context to achieve sustainability deliberations from various experts from the field of built environment the First National Conference is organized by Saveetha College of Architecture and Design on Chennai in collaboration with The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Tamil Nadu on the title “Sustainable Urban Communities and Good Environs” (SURGE 2020).
In this, the key issues like urban governance and finance, urban services and networks, urban landscape are discussed in the National conference by various experts and stake holders and share their experience towards developing a sustainable community.
Padmashree Ar. Dr. G Shankar has agreed to grace the Conference and is the Chief Guest for the SCAD SURGE 2020. Padmashree Ar. Dr. G Shankar, A master mason and People’s Architect, has been engaged in bringing about social development through architecture. In recognition to the distinguished services in the field if Science and Engineering, Govt. Of India in 2011 awarded G. Shankar with Padmashree - The fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India.
SCAD SURGE 2020 is organized in collaboration with Indian Institute of Architects Tamil Nadu Chapter. Ar. Senthil Kumar, Chairman, IIA, TN Chapter will deliver the Special Address.
Technical Session 1 will be chaired by Dr. Kalai Selvi, Professor, Rajalakshmi school of Architecture, Chennai and Session Chair for Technical Session 2 is Dr. Monsingh. D. Devadas, Former Dean, SAP, Anna University and Principal, Measi Academy of Architecture, Chennai.

SUSTAINABLE URBAN COMMUNITIES
Urban Communities have been deprived of the basic infrastructure and there is insufficient or there is no equivalent allocation of resources reaching the urban communities, where there is a high density of people. The Triple Bottom line approach of Economic, Social and Environmental Sustainability is the key to Sustainable Urban Communities. The sub areas of interest include Urban Social Reforms, Urban Economics, Urban Culture and Sustainability.
SUSTAINABLE URBAN GOVERNANCE
There should be continuous engagement with the urban societies, but the success of a policy or project also depends upon the capacity of local governments to develop and maintain the projects. In this context it becomes extremely important to find sustainable solutions at the Policy level. The sub areas of interest include: Urban Policies and Programmes, Urban Regulatory Norms, Urban Political Intervention.
SUSTAINABLE URBAN LANDSCAPE
Increased urbanization and localization has put considerable pressure on cities. Cities are responding to these challenges primarily through urban networking. Urban networks and its landscape are the key ingredients of what defines a city along with its density and the way of life of the people. So it becomes important to find sustainable measures for efficient urban networks. The sub themes include Urban Ecology and Environment Planning, Urban Land use Planning, Urban Technologies, Services and Network Planning.
SCAD SURGE 2020 is Open to Urban Planners, Research Scholars, Post Graduate students, Under Graduate Students, Architects , Builders , Designers, Civil Engineers, Environmentalists and all those who are interested in building sustainable communities.
